A Teddy Bear's Picnic

Lily's class have been focusing on the Little Bear stories of Jane Hissey for a few weeks. Last week was their last week on the author before moving on to a new literacy topic, so her teacher had planned a teddy bear's picnic for the class on Friday afternoon. All the children were to bring a teddy and something to eat, the teacher would bring some cakes and they would all share the stories they had written in class. Lily was very much looking forward to it, so you can imagine her disappointment when she woke up on Friday morning with a wry neck and couldn't straighten her head. She has suffered from this before and it is something I have suffered from occasionally since I was a child. It is quite painful when you try to move your head, suffice it to say she was unable to go to school. She was so upset to be missing her picnic, so I promised her we would have our own teddy bear's picnic for tea that evening.

I made some fairy cakes (with pink icing to please Lily) and we laid out a blanket and cushions in the lounge and gathered up lots of teddy bears. I laid out a selection of bear-themed books on the coffee table and we enjoyed a rather lovely little picnic together. Lily seemed very pleased with the result and said that she thought our picnic was much better than her class one would have been.

Just a few of our bear-themed picture books.

If you want a good book about a teddy bear's picnic, can I heartily recommend  'In the Woods' by Chris Wormell. It is one of our favourite stories and I can't say enough good things about it.
Here's the blurb from the back of the book: "One day, three teddy bears called Bubba, Rollo and Pog set off into the woods for a picnic. But before too long they are utterly lost and Rollo has eaten all their food. At least there are no wolves to attack them in these woods . . . or are there?"

Go and get a copy, you won't regret it!
